BKA SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - GENERAL

  • All dojo/clubs are to download a copy of the BKA H&S statement form the BKA website. This must be signed and dated by the dojo leader (or nominated person).
  • Generic Risk Assessments (GRA) are to be used to identify hazards and appropriate control measures in accordance with current guidance (see BKA website).
  • Dojo leaders are to download the BKA ‘compliance’ document from the BKA website. This must be signed, dated and held in a safe place for future reference/inspection.A confirmation e-mail is to be sent to the BKA, H&S Adviser for the BKA records.
  • A list of all dojo leaders, instructors and qualifications will be held by the BKA.Dojo leaders are to maintain local records and inform the BKA of any changes, eg departures, arrivals, changes to qualifications.
  • All dojo/clubs must keep a written record of any injuries and any that require hospital treatment. The BKA must be notified of any serious injury, eg e-mail to the H&S Adviser, as soon as circumstances permit.
  • The BKA will carry out an annual review of H&S policy and procedures.

BKA SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - GUIDANCE NOTES

GENERIC RISK ASSESSMENT

  • The Generic Risk Assessment is provided to assist the Dojo Leader (or nominated person) with the procedure. The majority of hazards and control measures have been identified. It only remains for the person carrying out the assessment to decide if the residual risk, ie is the remaining chance of injury acceptable? If not, further controls will be necessary – eg part of the floor may be damaged at one end of the venue. In this case the residual risk will be too great and further controls, such as to cordon the damaged area, will be required.

ACCIDENT RECORDING

  • It is in the interest of the dojo, instructors, BKA insurers and the individual to ensure that accidents are recorded. These records must be kept by the dojo in case information is required at a later date. The expiry time for civil proceedings is 3 years, however should the injured party be under 18 years, he/she may initiate action up to 3 years from his/her 18th birthday. We must therefore keep these records until the deadline expires.
  • Certain types of accidents that occur in a workplace, eg a Leisure Centre (it’s the staff that are working not us) may require the centre to report the matter to the Health and Safety Executive, or local authority. If such a report, known as a RIDDOR, is raised a copy should be obtained and kept with the accident report.
