IAIDO AND JODO PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER REPORT JANUARY 2008

Media attention has been very focused on the proposed government ban on the ‘samurai sword’ and how this will become a law in April 2008. Local clubs and sword collectors have been very proactive in raising awareness through the media on making an important distinction between people who are genuine practitioners of the sword and those people who choose to use ‘knives’ or ‘sword replicas’ for criminal activity. This has included signing a national petition to safeguard martial art practitioners and collectors.

Dojo representatives have sought advice on how to deal with this issue locally which demonstrates a very sensible response and attitude by BKA members which is to be applauded.

Additional media coverage has been obtained by local clubs raising the profile of their dojo and activities. Support in writing press releases has been given where requested.

Seni 2007 was attended by Steve Boyle as the venue was very close to his dojo. This was seen as an opportunity to promote Iaido locally and regionally.

Events are being planned throughout the year by various dojos to profile both Iaido and Jodo with seminars and competitions many of which are self financing.

Gratitude is extended to those dojo leaders and members who have been very supportive and proactive with regards to contacting me on matters relating to public relations and media for the BKA.
