Rules for National Kendo Taikai

Revised June 2006

All Competitions are governed under the British Kendo Association Rules

BRITISH OPEN KENDO TAIKAI

INDIVIDUAL EVENT

FORM:The Taikai shall consist of 5 individual competitions.

One for competitors aged 18 years of age and above, three for junior members and one for Ladies.

The later comprises of four individual categories.

Firstly for competitors aged 9 to 12, secondly aged 13 to 15 thirdly for competitors 16 to17 years of age and lastly for Ladies aged 18 years and above

Qualifying age is taken from 1st January of the year of the competition.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.

National and Senior Plate Category

Age 18 years of age and above

1st Kyu to 3rd Dan: National Champion.

4th Dan and above: Senior Plate.

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 5 minutes.

Junior Categories

Age Category 9 to 12

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 3 minutes.

Shiai for this age category will be judged on Han-tei.

The use of Tsuki Waza will not to be permitted in this age category to minimise the risk of injury.

Age category 13 to 15

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 3 minutes.

The use of Tsuki Waza will not be permitted in this category

Age category 16 to 17

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 3 minutes.

The use of Tsuki Waza will not be permitted in this category

Ladies Category

Aged 18 and above

RULES: For all categories

There will be first round pools; one or two competitors will go through to the next round depending on the number taking part.

This will be followed by a knockout out system.

IKF/ EKF rules apply to all matches.

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 5 minutes.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.


NATIONAL KENDO NO KATA TAIKAI

FORM: The National Kendo No Kata Taikai will be run in conjunction with the British Open Kendo Taikai.Each Dojo may enter three pairs of players of grades up to and including 5th Dan, which are registerd to that Dojo for a minimum of 3 months before the date of the taikai and to the BKA for the same minimum time period.Pairs will be judged on performance and technique.

RULES: A knock out system for senior members only aged 18 years of age and above. Judged by Han-tei with pairs performing three forms out of the first seven forms of Kendo No Kata chosen on the day, until the semi final when three forms from the whole ten forms of Kendo No Kata will be performed.

All forms of Kendo No Kata will be performed on both sides Shidachi/Uchidachi. They will be performed in an order chosen on the day.

Qualifying age is taken from 1st January of the year of the competition.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.


KASHI NO KI KENYU KAI

JUNIOR NATIONAL KIHON KEIKO HO TAIKAI

FORM: The Kashi No Ki Kenyu Kai, Junior National Kihon Keiko Ho Taikai will be run in conjunction with the British Open Kendo Taikai.

Each Dojo may enter three pairs of players of grades up to and including shodan, which are registered, to that Dojo for a minimum of 3 months and to the BKA for the same minimum time period.

RULES: A knock out system for junior members only age 9 to 17 years of age.

Judged by Han-tei, with pairs performing the first 5 forms of Bokuto Kihon Keiko Ho until the semi-final when the remaining 4 forms of the total 9 will be performed.

All forms of Bokuto Kihon Keiko Ho will be performed on both sides

Kakari -te/Motodachi.They will be performed in an order chosen on the day.

Pairs will be judged on performance and technique.

Qualifying age is taken from 1st January of the year of the competition.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.


THE SIR FRANK BOWDEN MEMORIAL TAIKAI

TEAM EVENT

FORM: The Sir Frank Bowden Memorial Taikai will consist of teams of 5 players aged 18 years of age and above, being registered to a Dojo or club within the British Kendo Association, to a minimum of 3 persons. This is to cater for smaller clubs who may not have sufficient registered members to take part, by allowing other BKA members to be included within such teams.

RULES: The use of Tsuki Waza will not be permitted in shiai categories of mixed male and female matches except in the instance of a match involving a Jodan or Nito player

IKF/EKF rules apply to all matches.

Pool and knock out systems will be decided by the Kendo Bu.

Qualifying age is taken from the 1st January of the year of competition.

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 5 minutes.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.


THE PREMIER’S CUP'''

INDIVIDUAL EVENT

FORM: The Premier’s Cup Taikai will be open to British nationals only 18 years of age and above.

RULES: Depending on the number of participants taking part, pools with one or two players going through to the first round and then a following knock out system through to the final.IKF/EKF rules apply to all matches.

The use of Tsuki Waza will not be permitted in shiai categories of mixed male and female matches except in the instance of a match involving a Jodan or Nito player.

Qualifying age is taken from the 1st January of the year of competition

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 5 minutes.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.


KAGAMISHIN JUNOR OPEN TAIKAI '''

INDIVIDUAL OPEN EVENT

FORM: The Kagamishin Junior Open Taikai will be open for British nationals only.

This Taikai will be run in conjunction with the Premier’s Cup and will consist of individual events for mixed boys and girls of an age category of 13 to 17 years of age only.

RULES: Time duration for each shiai match will be a maximum of 3 minutes. The use of Tsuki Waza will not be permitted in this category.

Qualifying age is taken from 1st January of the year of the competition.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.


THE LIDSTONE TAIKAI'''

INDIVIDUAL EVENT

FORM: The Lidstone Taikai will consist of individual events of Kyu grades that are in Bogu aged 18 years of age and above.

RULES: The use of Tsuki Waza will not be permitted in shiai categories of mixed male and female matches except in the instance of a match involving a Jodan or Nito player

IKF/EKF rules apply to all matches with a system based on first round pools followed by a knock out system.

Qualifying age is taken from 1st January of the year of competition.

Time duration for each shiai will be a maximum of 5 minutes.

Kyu grades in excess of 3 years experience will not be allowed to participate.

All participants must be fully paid up members of the Association for a minimum of 3 months prior to the date of the Taikai and will be required to show their BKA membership at registration.
